Aluminium is a chemical element with the symbol Al. The melting point is 659° C and the boiling temperature is 2270° C. It is a silvery-white metal with a density of 2.7g/cm³.
Aluminium is the most common metal on earth and accounts for 7% of the earth's crust in its oxide form. Aluminium has good durability. The reason is that on the surface aluminium will form a thin layer (about 0.01 microns) of aluminium oxide which prevent e.g. water form having direct contact with the aluminium surface.
Zinc is a chemical element with the symbol Zn. The melting point is 419°, the boiling point is 907° C and density is approx. 7.13 g/cm³.
Zinc has good durability in the atmosphere. Here zinc reacts with the formation of zinc oxide on the surface. With the addition of water (rain and humidity) zinc hydroxide is formed, which under the influence of atmospheric carbon dioxide is transformed into a dense solid binding - a water insoluble layer of basic zinc carbonate passivation. This protective layer gives the zinc its high corrosion resistance.
Magnesium is the chemical element with the symbol Mg. The melting point is 650° C and the boiling point is 1090° C. It is a silver shiny metal with a density of 1.74 g/cm³.
Like aluminium, magnesium is light and strong. Magnesium is the third most used metal for construction purposes after steel and aluminium. Some magnesium compounds, especially magnesium oxide, are used for components which must withstand very high temperatures. It is also used in cars for alloys in engine blocks, where its low density is a distinct advantage.
